Air Force, learn cybersecurity skills. Transition to a job earning 6 figures after the military

this was me. 2012/2013, wishing i was at ITT Tech, normal college was so pointless. If i was gonna go to college, i wanted to learn something immediately to get paid immediately. working as a customer associate at lowes.

went to the Air Force recruiter in 2013, depped up in may, shipped out as a signals analyst in sept. i had no idea wtf anything was. but anywhere was better than “here doing this”.

got out in 2023, did 10 years, E6 up for E7 if i had stayed. 8 years in the Air Force, took a special assignment around year 5/6 that was a space mission. then the Space Force came out and they were looking for 2 year commitments and i got selected to swap over.

now im a systems engineer for an engineering consultant in the space industry, which sounds fancy but i basically moved two sections over in my current office. work a normal 40. amazing benefits. what IS fancy is that thanks to all of these decisions, i make over 200k/year not including my VA disability which is about another 30k i dont have to worry about.

honestly, joining the military was probably the 1 singular decision that saved my life.

Air Force is more picky. If you don’t score high enough you’ll probably end up working at a MOS that will destroy your hearing. Air Force will also not seeing waivers.

Army will take just about everyone but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t score high on the ASVAB.

Speak to a recruiter and he’ll tell you about the challenges of joining later. If you feel that you have no options, then by all means give it a shot.

Get the best score you can on the ASVAB and pick an air force job that’s requires a top secret security clearance. Either stay for one enlistment and get a civilian job afterwards that pays 6 figures for the rest of your life, or ride it out for 20 years and get a guaranteed retirement

Enlistment sounds bad enough at age 18 when you are better suited to being screamed at and beaten down by exercise, all while living in abject squalor around a bunch of smelly dudes…

Any interest in flying? You could look into the Army’s Warrant Officer program. As far as I understand, it’s the only way you can fly without being a full blown officer which requires a 4 year degree. Look up “street to seat US Army Warrant officer pilots”. You could push to end up in a Black Hawk or Chinook instead of the Apache/Little Bird.

That’s the only thing I’d even consider doing in the military without a 4 year degree. Be enlisted sounds like it sucks. Downside is, you would have a whopping 10 YEAR obligation and that’s *after* you finish training and get your wings. That’s what steered me away from doing it. I don’t want to be stuck there for that long, and quite frankly I find it kind of nuts that dudes just yolo a decade into the military without even knowing what it’s really going to be like.

Maybe you should look into Law Enforcement. I know departments are stretched pretty thin across the board.

    Joined later, became a Navy
Corpsman served with the Marines.   Fun times, got out. Used 9/11 gi bill, went to school.  Became RN.  Bought house using VA home loan.

Now manage a dialysis clinic.  Own a house.  2 cars, a wife, 2 kids.  Close to 6 figures in LCOL area.

Life is good.  I had a direct combat MOS as a field medic, but was never used as one.

Keep something in mind: if you join a military you are more directly involved in killing on behalf of mega corporations and a certain country that controls ours, no its not China or Russia or Iran but it does beef with Iran and gets most of our money.

Think of the deeper psychological fact you could hurt not just yourself but others who arent even really your enemy but just have lots of oil
