Cyber isn’t an entry level field; you’ll need to go into an entry level IT role (think: help desk or something similar) and work for a few years before employers would even consider you. And the tech market is so oversaturated at the entry level, that even getting that first entry level job will take a long time. Plenty of people are giving up without ever formally breaking in, due to how bad the market is.

It’s kind of weird the way we lump together “the trades”, sometimes referring to electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and welders. Sometimes including mechanics and machinists, and sometimes a lot of different kinds of technicians – and even healthcare workers.

If I was starting over at 28, I’d look into apprenticeships offered by trade unions in your area.

While nursing is probably easier for most people, and you can start working as an LPN.

Op, the big problem that you have is that you are just doing this for the money. It’s understandable, of course. But I can promise you that there’s going to be uncertainty and second guessing. You might feel as though you’ll just commit to cyber and then you’ll see articles about high unemployment. You might try nursing and you see how terrible the hours areand how someone is so burnt out they are trying to quit. Etc, etc, etc…

The point is that all of these journeys are so long that it will take you a lot of time and a lot of second guessing. Especially since you’re 28 (which is very young — but it is an age where people are especially susceptible to second guessing their decisions).

I’d recommend trying to find a balance of an option that you’re interested in combined with good financial prospects. From my own life, I went the tech route but I became absolutely amazed with how computers work and it has been absolutely fascinating to me. I studied by myself and kept saying if it didn’t work out at least I have an incredible hobby. Then as I learned more I took a two year course. All throughout the last four years I have been doubting myself but also reassuring myself that at least it was something I was interested in. Now that I finished my two year course 6 months ago (now 34) I finally landed my first job which pays $100,000 a year and has room for growth — but I am still doubting myself: maybe I am going to crumble under the pressure and be fired, maybe AI will replace me… and I am also still getting through it by comforting myself that I have a great interest and I get to learn about it.

If you have an interest in nursing, then it is a good idea to stick with nursing.

If there is anything worth the time, it’s a string career. RN is a good career, and it branches into a lot of other occupations that pay well. Tech is iffy, unless you got a plan and strong contacts that will take you in, I might pass on this. Trades are always in play, but people don’t like to get dirty, and sitting at a computer / smartphone is addictive and some just can’t go without a screen during the day.

Do you like medicine? Do you like or at least okay with caring for people? If not, no. If you are only in it for the money, you are going to burn out and quit most likely. The people who like being nurses burn out and quit all the time, the people who don’t are even less likely to stick around or even finish the program. It’s not a get rich quick scheme, the pay is so high for a reason.
