Programming jobs are going to be replaced by Ai soon anyways, and it’s also a massive struggle to just get a job in that field unless you’re like really good, so idk how useful the degree is tbh.
I’d recommend a trade honestly if you’ve the body for it.
Some weird considerations, options, maybe’s:
– programming robots and other manufacturing line automation systems
– cnc machining
– Go back and take the minimum credits to get a degree in anything. (Business administration would be good because with your technical education and BA degree that primes you for IT management immediately. Nobody gets promoted from IT into management)
– project management
I also suggest you try your hand once or twice at weird random HOBBY stuff like
– set aside a small amount of cash, even $100, and try learning about stock trading. Learn about valuing companies (I think it’s called p value) and comparing that to the value of the stock. This tells you if it’s over valued or under valued and if it’s under valued, buy it and wait for the value of the stock to rise to the value of the company.
– learn about things like prospecting gold, silver, gems and diamonds, rock hounding, or fossil hunting. These kinds of activities are interesting, intellectually stimulating, and can inspire you to move around, get outside, change of scenery, etc. These are therapy hobbies. Metal detecting is another. Easy to pick up, keeps the mind occupied, and there’s no right or wrong. There are communities but they aren’t oppressive or demanding. 90% of the people who get into these do it for therapy and enjoy the solitude and like having excuse to get outside.
– consider getting a dog if you don’t have one. Or at least find a rescue organization and attend a “puppy meet” where there’s no pressure to adopt, you just spend an hour playing with a puppy.
The biggest thing here is actually your mental health, which is why I suggested a lot of these. You’re clearly intelligent and have a vague sense of yourself, but you see too many options and are overwhelmed by the ramifications of each choice – overthinking. This is all standard depression stuff.
The programming job market is in a massive transition with a ton of misinformation and misjudgment making sweeping unsubstantiated claims like that it’s going away entirely or shrinking. None of that is accurate, but it’s extremely hard to get a job momentarily for stupid reasons – the recruitment systems are broken, globally. Management is also not understanding the changes on top of that and some managers actually believe progressing will go away, completely missing the fact that AI systems ARE THEMSELVES PROGRAMS that need to be tweaked and overseen and someone to ensure there are safeguards and stuff in place. Even human programmers need code review – AI “programmers” need that times 10.
I have a whole thing I usually recommend about finding your skills and passions, but for you I think the issue is more about getting on top of your mental health while continuing to take some kind of minor forward steps.
I don’t like recommending medical fields, personal. It’s all about interacting with prior and that can burn out a depressed person, but that’s just my sense and may not be you. If working with people gives you energy, then absolutely!
Anyways, good luck!!
You could be a Certified Nurse Aide to try the medical field without years of school. Might pay more than your current jobs too.
Just don’t write excuses anymore. Focus on what you are trying to accomplish. You need to look into all your options and think of any questions you can to come up with the answers you need. Sometimes we need to fail before we succeed, but you need to go through the process.
