Consider getting an associates degree or certification in a certain field that you like but also has a demand where you live or where you want to live (e.g., solar installation, HVAC etc). In the mean time you can work at a restaurant while you get your degree.
If that’s not an option, I’ve been told UPS is a good place to work if you don’t have a college degree.
I had an uncle that was laid off from a company he had been at for awhile. The unemployment board put him in a program for retraining through a local community college.
He studied automotive repair, he was a year into his school. When his company recalled him. He went back but continued his training and got his diploma. Working full time. The funny thing was he worked out of his home shop. But never worked full time in a garage. But continued at the company until retirement. But I always thought it was a smart decision. He had a fallback in case of layoffs.
Since you were laid off you may be eligible for retaining benefits?
This comes from search.
Workers who are laid off may be entitled to a severance package from their employer, which can include continued pay, continued health insurance (COBRA), and job placement services, though these are not federally mandated and depend on company policy. They also often qualify for state-administered unemployment benefits, which provide temporary income while looking for new work. Additionally, laid-off employees can find resources at CareerOneStop and [USA.gov](http://USA.gov) for assistance with other needs like rent, food, and financial counseling.
Laid-off workers can receive several benefits from retraining programs, including federal funding through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) or the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program, which cover costs for training, reemployment services, job search allowances, and relocation assistance. These programs can lead to increased income potential, job satisfaction, and career development for the worker. For the economy, retraining programs aim to reduce reliance on welfare and increase tax revenue from employment.
Hope this helps!!!
Good luck!!!
Early thirties and I feel this hard.
may i ask how you managed to get your previous roles without a degree/certificate?
Try to get a job with your city. They normally have really good benefits and the pay isn’t too bad either. Sometimes they are even union jobs. For as young as you are it would be a great job to work for 30 years and retire.
Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines.
Free housing, food, healthcare, school, and a plethora of benefits. You’ll get the VA home loan, the GI bill, and everything else. Do a 2-3 year contract and get out. Score high on the ASVAB and pick a job that translates well to the civilian world. You aren’t risking your life, you’re risking your time. I have buddies who did 4 year contracts and didn’t deploy a single time on active duty. (Army)
If you don’t spend your money like an idiot you’ll have a good amount saved up when you get out. There’s also option 19 where you pick your first duty station, if you’re on a 3 year contract that’ll likely be your only duty station. You could go to Japan or Hawaii by choice if your MOS allows.
If you decide to stay and you’re say 28 or 29 you’ll be retired by 48 or 49 years old. The retirement age for civilians is 62-65.
You must go get your bachelor’s degree or you will continue to get stuck.
Go back to school and get a job
