Honestly most SEO people out there aren’t that reliable. Make them show you actual optimization data first. Also one-off SEO work doesn’t really do much, but if they’re just giving you a strategy and roadmap that you can implement yourselves, that’s fine
Know any other friends with small/mid size businesses?
Ask who they got help from – all of my clients are via word of mouth/referral.
Always got a lot of time for small businesses being one myself!
I guess you’ll want find people that offer small business SEO services and ones that don’t lock you into any nasty long term retainers – at least that’s what I do. Avoid agencies in my opinion as a lot of them can treat you as ‘just another number’ and some even work with competitors at the same time.
Once youve found an expert look at their LinkedIn credentials, read Google reviews if they have any and see if they fit the bill.
Id probably avoid places like Fiverr tbh although I’m sure some of these platforms have some decent experts too.
Happy to give advice if you need it .
If budgets a factor you could hire one to consult but you do the work
>Would love a referral with some straightforward pricing, if there’s an option.
As mentioned, you could ask your network of friends/clients who they might use if you’re looking for referrals you trust. I get most of my clients via word of mouth.
If you have time there is stuff you can do yourself. For example, if you work with another company see if they can provide a backlink or leave a review.
If your goal is to rank higher in your city you want someone who can help with Local SEO, which boils down to three things Relevance, Distance and Prominence which you can find out more on Google Help or if you Google “local seo google”. From there you’ll see you want to build Google Reviews, and get on a few of the main directory websites. You could check out r/localseo and search specific questions.
If you don’t have time, not interested or have the money to pay for someone and you just want to rank higher, make sure you know what you want to achieve, ask them for past work (what they actually did – they could name a big client but done zilch for them) and what they would plan to do. This community is very helpful so can usually help with any specific questions you have.
You want to look for someone who has actual case studies proving what they claim. Don’t be afraid to reach out to past clients and ask about their experience. Reviews matter. Not the ones that are all grouped in a week, then a gap and then a group again. That spells fake.
For a small business, I know from my experience, I work with companies who have limited budgets so I am sure others do as well.
