I’m not sure where you’ve sourced the consensus on word count from, but I can say pretty unequivocally that there’s no required length you need to hit in order to rank – in fact, arbitrarily padding out your content in order to reach a desired word count is more likely to hinder than help.
The reason there’s a lot of misinformation about word counts out there is that a lot of people don’t understand that correlation ≠ causation.
Yes, a lot of long content ranks. But that’s not the same as saying that content needs to be long to rank. Or even that making content long will increase the chances of ranking. It’s highly keyword dependant but, more importantly, length is the wrong thing to be thinking about at all.
Instead of thinking about length, think about the intent behind the search you’re trying to rank for. Consider how well that intent is being served by the pages which rank already.
Then consider what your page would have to look like in order to serve that intent better, and in a way that you can clearly convey within the search results (via your metadata) in order to drive engagement.
Sometimes serving that search intent might necessitate a long page. Sometimes it won’t. Either way, think about being the best and most compelling response to the query rather than thinking about word count.
As long as it needs to be. Which can be very short or very long depending on the topic. Personally I don’t even like working to a word count when I’m working with writers, I prefer a day rate instead of paying per article or by word. A word count can end up with overstuffed content or content much too brief – of course with experience you’ll have a good rough idea of what ballpark it would be in, and you can get some ideas from looking at competitors.
Never did. Never will.
Pick the topic your in, look in google who is first, observe how many words they have, write around that much.
Word count does not work IMO.
I know of pages from u/WebLinkr outranking others, with only a title. No content other than the page title.
