Its the same thing. GEO AI Tool builders want people to give up on SEO and the SEO tools from the past 20 years and are paying SEO’s to push disinformation – its everywhere. We get about 50 spam posts a day maybe more – you can see it all over the other subs and on Linkedin esp.
It usually takes the form of:
AI tools prefer (citations, PR, E-E-A-T
Why SEO is dead, AI prefers X instead of keyword stuffing and backlinks
Anywhere you see someone explaing GEO where LLMs are described as independent search engines with a different rank stacking mechanism (e.g. PageRank for Google, Bing, Yandex) – its basically GEO disinformation
why should we convince you of something that is not true? It doesn’t make any sense
It IS NOT the same thing.
I believed it was the same thing at first. I mean AI just uses googles API right?
I recently got a new client, he said I was recommended by Chat GPT. My company website, does NOT rank well on Google. I’m not even on the first or second page.
If it was the same thing, wouldn’t I not show up on ChatGPT?
You’re literally agreeing with yourself.
You’re seeing real spam and disinformation, no question. The GEO tool space is full of companies making unproven claims and paying for promotion.
But dismissing the entire shift as fake misses what’s actually happening. People are genuinely asking AI for recommendations instead of clicking through Google results. That’s real behavior change, not marketing hype.
The problem is most GEO companies are selling snake oil solutions to a real problem. Synthetic testing, fake guarantees, manufactured metrics. I’m working on Sentaiment and it drives me crazy how much dishonesty there is in this space.
You’re right that the fundamentals haven’t changed. Good content, real authority, legitimate sources. That still matters. But the distribution mechanism is shifting and pretending it’s not happening because the tools are mostly garbage doesn’t help anyone.
LLMs aren’t independent search engines with different ranking algorithms. They’re pulling from existing web content with different prioritization patterns. The distinction matters.
The spam is real, the disinformation is real, most of the tools are worthless. But the underlying trend of AI-mediated discovery is also real. Those things can both be true.
I think we can all agree. It’s semantics. Yes, Geo is completely different than traditional keyword driven SEO. Or you could just say it’s a new set of necessities in a generative search environment. It’s the new SEO.
Either way, we’re talking in circles, talking the same language.
And the key is, we’ve got to understand how seo’s expanded beyond simple linear indexing and keywords.
And if you’re active in this thread, you probably got that already so you don’t need me to tell you about it, 🙌👍
Ai bots crawl for two things: Training Data and Search indexing.
If you want your data to be trained by these bots, make sure you don’t block server side and by allowing in robots.txt (default is allowed, but it should be a conscious decision to allow or disallow).
The AIs rely on others indexes like Google, but will crawl too. You can help them by summarizing the content of the page on top with a freshness value (date written, date updated). Just like with SEO, structure your page well, but AI bots interpret more human like than your regular crawlers.
Some AI tools will use the llms.txt to tell crawlers what’s on their website and it should work better than your standard sitemap.
Okay what even is GEO lol
I have changed my blogging tactics strictly for those ai snippets. I recently wrote a blog with my target keyword and state in title as a question format. I then answered that question via the content and included FAQs and schema. After that I did a guestpost on another site for the same topic as my blog with a backlink for the same keyword. Within 1 week I was on page 1 organic and had a top AI snippet. So, I have definitely changed the way I handle backlinks and blogs in order to get AI results.
