Matt Cutts, Google Search team, Grump SEO guy —- that should be more than enough.
SEO is really easy. SEO is about Content and Relevance, Authority and Traffic. And then everything else is either an extrapolation or a myth.
Everything in society works on 3rd party validation – we don trust the source. (see: Begs the Question, Circular logic): degrees, electing officials via votes, isurance, government regulations, etc
In SEO – PageRank uses backlinks – a controlled source that predicts that other webmasters will link to content that they like or value or to express a relationship. Google works on PageRank. PageRank is currency/unobtanium/bitcoin/gold/US$ – its meant to be rare, its meant to be hard to get.
PageRank is listed in the [Google SEO Starter Guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide) as “fundamental” to SEO. The SEO starter guide is a must read…..
Everything you do in a page = Relevance. The title, the document name, headings meta-descriptions, schema. For very high authority sites – each word could be a ranking “signal”….
Spiders & Crawlers
For all intents and purposes, spiders dont exist: they’ve been romanticised and exploded by illustrative writing that has made them into mythical creatures. But spiders are bots and they are VERY basic.
Bots do very little processing. They dont try to understand a whole site. they work at a page level. They fetch pages, and pass them to indexing services that may index them or may ignore them. Bots will fetch everyting, including de-indexed pages and penalized pages. They are indiscriminate. They take ALL urls found and put them in more lists. This is so Google finds EVERY page.
Some people think spiders project your whole site and render them like a “human browser” and admire the design and layout and menus …. they do not. They work in text and extract body text and meta data and move on.
Bots ARE CRITICAL to SEO because they find the PageRank that your site needs: XML sitemaps do not.
# Ranking Factors vs Signals
Ranking factors = things that move the needle – that change your position. Ranking Signals tell Google what your page is about, what language, what country.
HRefLang for example – is a strong signal for the language and maybe location. Using “UK” in your document name is medium signal for geo-location. Using a city name is a medium signal (as city names = search words). Images = weak signals. Page Titles and Document names = STRONG singla.s
Signals tell Google what search index you’re content belongs to; rank factors are how Google works out in what position to rank you;.
All the wrong places. What you need are Google guidelines, then (AND ONLY THEN, ONCE YOU KNOW THE BASICS AND CAN TELL THE BS) start watching the videos or whatever. Believe me, you’ll spend very little time on YouTube once you realize 90% of the “SEO gurus” are just smoke sellers.
