bro your life is just starting, do not count yourself out at the prime age of 26 that’s ridiculous. you still have ample time to apply yourself and achieve all the things you listed out for yourself. this is a hard time in life & a lot of us are stuck at home still trying to figure this all out, it’s not a race & no one is expecting you to have it all figured out. this is your wake up call, you have realized that you feel stuck & unprogressive and that is okay, now is your time to take action against that. save up & plan a trip, dedicate some time each day to learning a skill it’s not exactly over until you’re dead.

Gain skills in excel, quickbooks, Shopify, maybe other crash courses with certifications. Apply for better positions to support yourself while living at home or if you can, with roommates. Then invest in yourself for a stable career path. There’s tons of streamlined programs at community colleges that will set you up with awesome careers. You really don’t need a whole lot of time, just patience, discipline and drive to stay with your plan. Good luck! I believe in you

I think the reality of things is that it is extremely hard to do it all in your 20’s unless you have access to throwing away a lot of money… A lot more people than you realize get things done in their 30’s when they have more money and focus. However, you are lucky being in the US because there are several options to get into careers with shorter paths if you wish.

The reality is that it is very difficult to get jobs with just a university degree in many places now, but you also need a university degree to compete against others in the running 🙃 That alone means that many are having to tack on a number of years where they aren’t making good money. Usually at 25, you start noticing that education isn’t really serving you what you thought you were getting out of a deal, then you feel this mismatch of feelings + priorities. It is also a fact that people change as they get older and the initial career one picks may no longer be a viable option. A number of people go back to school mid-late 20’s at that point for something else or add onto their previous education for more of an edge in their industry. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

You could have travelled for a year, but let’s be honest- many parents discourage against a young person doing that kind of travel and it is difficult to fund on a minimum wage salary, especially post-pandemic. I just travelled for a week to Europe and it cost me about $3500 total! Most of that was for airfare and hotel. We weren’t staying in a luxury hotel either, just somewhere safe and secure. You could do a study abroad semester at school maybe, but again it can be expensive. You could take a year with a work travel visa to visit a country if you are open to the jobs you apply too.

Learning marketable skills aren’t really something most people in their 20’s think much about unless they have been in some sort of situation where finances became a stressor. I think it is more something people in their 30’s look into tbh. Sure. You could have learned those skills, but I just want to point out that the mindset to do that and the mindset to travel the world are generally two different perspectives on how to live life.

So I guess I want to say that it really is not uncommon today for people to change careers into their 30’s or struggle throughout their 20’s. ESPECIALLY today. We are living through a recession post-pandemic. The jobs aren’t always as accessible for new grads and the opportunities aren’t always as plentiful. Living expenses have been rising. That means people are just realistically going to take longer to accomplish goals and settle, unless they have some major “support” in the background in one form or another.

That’s your fault. Should have taken life more seriously. Why didn’t you go to college and finish? Like I don’t get that what did you expect was going to happen ?
