Are they dropping 100 positions from the very top of search? From the bottom of page 1? Or from even lower?
It’s tricky to say without knowing the keywords, but as I said in another comment here recently it’s not uncommon to see a lot of volatility in rankings when you’re off page 1 for certain searches – particularly the further you get from #1 since, by definition, the lower your initial ranking the less confidence Google has in you being a strong result for the particular keyword.
I’ve also seen these kinds of oscillating drops and spikes for some pages for certain clients that even rank pretty high – it can potentially be an indicator that Google doesn’t have a great deal of confidence in _any_ of the top results for a particular search, hence the volatility.
That type of thing can be pretty common for certain niche keywords – things that might have some small consistent search volume but maybe not a lot of content that’s been created to purposely target it, and therefore the things that do rank are a looser fit for the query.
