Hey I know how you feel bro- especially with that moving out part. You are not running out of time because you are barely starting your adult life.

I would absolutely not go back to school right now because of your student loans. Instead I’d look at roles adjacent to your educational background. Schools hire IT guys for menial work, but the do pay a bit more than what you’re making. If you go to EDjoin.com and look around. Also look into IT or software roles at your University or local nonprofits.

I know it’s not what you want but I’ve known people start there or other help desk jobs and branch out from there after about 1-2 years.

You could also rewrite your resume and build a portfolio that showcases your knowledge AI much more. I’m not in this field so I’m not sure how to advise you but I’d reach out to professors and ask ask them to take a peak or there’s tons of YouTube videos on it too.

If I were you I wouldn’t be looking to take on more student loans unless a job was guaranteed, otherwise you’ll be in the same situation again with more debt

You already have 2 degrees. I don’t think 1 more will help unless it’s a PhD. What is your current job search strategy? I would start there

24 interviews tells me that you have a good resume and that companies are interested. The fact that you’ve had that many interviews with no offers suggests there’s a way you’re presenting yourself/experience that isn’t clicking with the hiring manager. I’d recommend doing some mock interviews with friends or colleagues to see if you can identify some points of improvement

Don’t add another degree to this problem. That’s the opposite of what you should do.

I work for a cyber professional org, dm me if you want me to look at your resume and provide some suggestions on where to apply.

I would not suggest getting another degree –

I never understand the mentality of parents wanting their kids to be out at age 18 – when they have not job skills or direction in life yet – do these parents want their kids to be homeless or what? i come from an Asian family so kids living with parents is normal and when their careers are starting they still live with their parents- just let them know you are still looking for tech job and let you save money now – you could pay them some money to help with bills if that is the case

what do your parents do? do they work in tech? the tech job market is bad now. i work and live in sf bay area – there have been big tech layoffs since 2022 – you have all these laid off tech workers looking for jobs – they have degrees, experienced , so the employers are even more selective now. i have had coworkers and friends be laid off – it has taken them over a year to two years to find a job –

the job market is really rough/bad now for tech – You need to keep applying and network or look at your personal network –

As a stop gap, you may find substitute teaching better than warehouse work. It does pay better per hour. No benefits though.

Sorry if I missed it but what type of engineering would you go back for? Electrical? If its not so different you could get a masters in it and not a bachelor’s.

If you can’t get a job in CS an engineering degree isn’t going to automatically help. If you have applied to 1000 jobs and not gotten a job, something is wrong with your application. Are you limiting yourself to certain geographic areas? Have you gone to hiring fairs or worked with your college on placements? Lots of jobs come from networking, not from dropping an application. Have you looked at government jobs? Have you looked at the military?

Most of our friends kids who recently graduated from college easily got jobs in their fields so in my mind you are doing something wrong in the application process.

“I feel like I did everything I was told I was supposed to do and somehow still ended up stuck.”

The honest truth is you rely too much on your “degree” and not enough actual skill set…

Let me ask you, with your Master. Can you build a website, mobile apps, network, security, and ect? Or do u just know the theories behind them?

Every field is different, but i know for a fact IT is heavy on certifications, while software engineer is portfolio heavy. It seem like u have neither which is why u struggling to get a job. The good news is, if u have certifications(IT route) or project portfolio(Software Engineer) and combine either with your degree. U can land a job.

If your grades are good maybe law school? STEM backgrounds do well on LSAT and can go into patent law, tech law, etc. you won’t really feel like you’re repeating undergrad so that’s something to consider. Or even med school/PA/dental which have some STEM prereqs. Teacher certification to teach computer classes or STEM (in demand)

The job market is remarkably rough right now. Fire out how to tread water for a few years and use this time to expand your network to position yourself for the time when growth starts to bump up

I’d be really hesitant to take on another degree and more debt when you already have a BS and MS in CS. At this point I’d probably widen the search beyond pure software roles before starting over completely… IT, QA, systems, technical support, data, analyst roles, even engineering-adjacent jobs where the programming background is useful. Getting the first decent job matters more than getting the perfect title right now.

And I definitely wouldn’t go back to school mainly as a way to move out. That’s a really expensive solution to the living-at-home problem.

You seem like a book smart guy, go try out officer school at the air force. If they don’t accept you, then try the army. Either way, you’re out of your parents house.

    You have two problems:
    1) an interviewing problem, and
    2) an application throughput problem.

About 1,000 applications led to about 24 interviews. That’s a 2.4% rate, which is poor but normal for entry-level tech right now. The industry is rough for a lot of reasons.

24 interviews and zero offers is the real red flag. Something is breaking at the interview stage. Technical screens, behavioral answers, or how you come across. Do mock interviews (school career center, peers, paid services) and ask for feedback whenever a company will give it.

Once you have fixed that, reach out to old professors, especially where you did research, and to classmates. Network. It seems like you were doing about 45 per week. You want to do more like 20 per week but with more fine-tuning.

I’m sure you’re frustrated but you’re actually not that far off track right now. It’s taking graduates like 6 to 12 months.

that is a tough spot with a BS and MS in Computer Science, but don’t let the market make you feel like your hard work was wasted. Skip another expensive degree, trust your strong technical foundation, and keep pushing forward,,you’ve got this.

Look into controls and automation. You have the programming background, see if you can’t move into maintenance in the warehouse you work at. Guy I used to work with started at a factory after he got his comp sci degree, moved to controls, how does technical sales and clears 100k easy. Not as cushy as software but it’s a good option.
