If you’re interested in healthcare, look into roles like medical assistant, phlebotomist, or patient care tech. Many have short certification programs or on-the-job training options. You could even check if your current workplace or network has any pathways or support for transitioning internally.

look into medical receptionist or patient access jobs at hospitals, your vet front desk skills transfer well. later some places even help pay for ma school. but yeah finding anything that pays decent without a degree right now is just pain

You will likely have to get your licensing in *something* to work in the medical field, but there’s a lot of variety in length of process and expenses compared to completing a degree. Nursing is one, do your research because there are several pathways all with pros and cons. You can also become a technician like X-ray or phlebotomy. IF you are open to it, you can look into online university options to get a degree in something like Health Sciences. Cheaper, faster, and opens your future to getting an MA in something down the line (like PT, OT, dietician, or PA).

Consider LPN/LVN program if you can work flexible shifts. The course is about a year. The pay is much better than a receptionist or medical assistant and the work is more interesting.

If I’m being honest, I’d start by looking at your local community college and exploring two-year programs that lead to solid, well-paying careers, especially in healthcare. Fields like nursing, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, or physical therapist assisting are all great options. There are a lot of two-year degrees that pay well, and they can be a smart investment if you’re interested in that field. You could also consider medical billing and coding or public health administration, though those roles can be a bit harder to land right now without some prior experience.

Edit: I also saw you mentioned you can’t afford college—definitely start by applying for FAFSA and look into WIOA grants. It’s also worth checking if your state offers funding for high-demand two-year healthcare programs, since some of those grants don’t have to be paid back. And don’t forget to see if your local community college has free tuition programs, especially if you’re over 25.
