I’d really look into the logistics of law school. Realistically you will incur a good bit of debt, and not all fields of law make a lot of money. Some only 70k, and those who make a lot have high billables and do crazy hours, though there are plenty of positions in the mid range making mid-high 100s with 40-50 hour weeks. I’d also consider a paralegal certificate. You can get it at a community college, and some paralegals make a lot of money in a good area with some experience under their belt. It’s also lower risk; if you don’t like it, there’s not so much to lose and you can always get a JD later if you really want.

Go for it! One of our local judges was a court reporter.

Studying at a law school will provide you with a great opportunity to learn and accumulate more knowledge in law. Furthermore, pursuing a degree in law would be really helpful for people who would like to pursue a career development in the judicial system. Besides, there are other options to advance your career with your current educational and professional experiences. For example, pursuing a graduate degree in criminology or other related fields might be helpful for you to further develop your career as well.

    Objectively yes.

Law isn’t my area but I’ve watched a friend for decades now who settled on paralegal and it just has not paid off at all. He’s not super unhappy but he’s working 2 jobs and looking at adding a third. It would have been worth it to spend 2 more years to get the law degree.

For some reason there seems to be this bizarre notion that studying law takes years and years and years and costs tens of thousands of dollars. Like, yes, you CAN take that route whether you’re going to top schools and getting advanced degrees. But it’s not the ONLY way. You don’t have to aim for being a top attorney, you can just get your degree and focus on contract law or family law or whatever. Even small businesses need attorneys.

I think misinformation and false assumptions create an artificial barrier to a career that’s no less accessible than any other profession.

Talk to as many lawyers as possigle. Most hate their jobs. You would probably be one of them simply from a statistical standpoint. Maybe you would love it.
