As long as search engines exist, SEO will continue to exist. Likewise, search engines are evolving and new types are appearing, which means learning from other areas.
I work with people who do SEO full-time, and have for years. If you have experience and technical abilities, you can be useful.
Easily, yes.
70%+ of businesses globally have a website as of recent years, and that number keeps rising as more companies realize how important online visibility is for revenue and growth.
On the user side, the internet still isn’t “fully saturated” either. 65% to 75% of the world’s population uses the internet today, which means both audiences and digital businesses are still expanding.
And when people want to buy, compare, or learn something, they usually start with search. Google is basically the front page of the internet. If your business isn’t discoverable there, you’re invisible to a massive chunk of potential customers.
Plus, every website is its own unique challenge to solve for, given how topical authority works, which keeps hings fun and interesting. 😀
Additionally, to me at least, it’s very fulfilling, since you can use your skills in SEO to drive inbound leads for small local businesses, fast-growing startups, or large companies that never treated their website like a serious lead gen asset before. Lot of coders/builders struggle with getting discovered and filling that gap with your skills feels awesome!
You can move to other marketing functions easily since the crux of every marketing function is understanding user/prospect/customer behaviour, which in SEO translates to understanding their search behaviour, i.e. the keywords they use.
But frankly, I personally, find SEO the most fun and engaging marketing function from my 8+ year journey across multiple functions – branding, PR, social media, events marketing, recruitment marketing.
I’ve been in SEO since 2004. I didn’t plan on it being a career but it definitely has shaped into one.
I started at Excite.com in 2000. I now lead AI/AEO initiatives for a Fortune 1000 company. Yeah, retiring from all this insanity in a year or two. It’s been very good to me.
It can be if you keep adapting to new tech, but I didn’t see lots of jobs in future like we used to have before AI, it’s been getting harder and harder to justify the value we bring.
I didn’t plan on it being one. When I got into websites there weren’t really any experts so I had to learn on my own. Then my ADHD brain hyper focused on it and I started taking on clients.

I’ve always liked that line in Blade Runner. Especially when a middle school students asks me if it was true we used to dial into the internet.
11 years in, and honestly, I wouldn’t start today knowing what I know now. It’s been a great career and it’s paid me very well, but I’ve reached the top of what this industry offers. At this point I can coast while AI steadily eats away at SEO and most other marketing roles. Because of that, I’m aggressively investing in other industries as a business owner to hedge my bets. I’m still making great money as an agency owner and consultant, but digital marketing feels like it’s heading down the same long decline traditional marketing has been on for decades. AI is doing to digital what digital did to traditional just much faster.

Yes, it is. I have been in seo for more than 8 years. Though AI is there, it’s again SEO’s responsibility to maintain their brand’s presence in relevant search results. Also, I know many social media platforms are already building their own search engines because people are now searching on social media too.
So, your job is to be wherever people search for solutions to their problems; your brand should be visible there.
