In my opinion, Google probably doesn’t monitor domain expiration dates as long as the website is still reachable. Expired domains with strong backlinks can help speed up indexing, but content quality and SEO are still the main factors that drive traffic.
Yes it still works. But you have to find the right domains. Due diligence and doing your homework looking at expired domains and finding the ones with the right links works really well. Even ones that expired a year or two ago. But again it’s still a crop shoot.
In the past the last month I’ve done “reverse” expired domain hunting, that’s all I can come up with to call it.
First, look at competitors’ links. Look at links to sites that are already ranking. Look at their best backlinks. Not necessarily the ones that have the highest “da” or authority, but the ones that are more trusted. Like the non profit organizations’ directories in a niche. Things like “national association of plumbers”, etc. (I don’t know if that exists, but you get the idea).
Then crawl those directories yourself. Crawl the sites and look at the external links. Look for “dns lookup failed” for example (that’s a status in screaming frog SEO spider btw).
Look again at the links to those domains and do your own evaluation. Does it have a lot of links? Are they on topic to what you want to use the domain for? Usually I won’t buy a domain unless it has a considerable amount of links, and it depends on the niche. And the domain has to be a generic word, no company names or trademarks. Ideally it’s a keyword related to the niche.
Take a chance, register some domains. Put up a placeholder or small website with unique content on it. AI is actually perfect for this, as you want to know who search engines are treating the domain. You can build a better site later if it works out.
The whole point is to register the domain, put up a small site on it, and wait. No outgoing links, no redirects. It’s either going to get crawled and indexed in a few days (sometimes quicker) or not. Then use the domain how you want—a link partner, a redirect, a brand new site.
You have to look at the current backlinks, due some due diligence on the domain. Take a chance, register and put up a site. You’ll know in 3-5 days which domains are good, which ones aren’t worth using.
In the last month I’ve registered about 50 domains that were completely expired (as they completely dropped and weren’t at auction). About 30 were great, new sites crawled and indexed within days. Adding a few links on those sites worked perfectly. Better rankings, more traffic and sales.
