Why weren’t you able to get a job in your field? 7 years ago a CS degree would’ve been the golden ticket. These days, its a rough market for new grads.
Without going back to school, your options are limited, but trades can be good. Try calling your local union, they often take guys with no experience and train them from the ground up. You can also start as a laborer doing something like landscaping and work your way up to a higher position.
I did this in the early 20s and ended up as a lead equipment operator and crew foreman.
Edit: after reading your replies to other comments, it seems like you have a victim mentality and refuse any advice given to you. In your mind you’re destined to suffer in retail and nothing will change. I dont mean this in a rude way, but you might want to look into therapy.
Nooooo… stop right there.. please consider what really interests you, and consider a profession in welding, underwater, or otherwise.. also, check out air traffic controller as a profession. It has not been completely realistic for everybody to follow their passion.. but eventually, a balance does work for most of us.
I am sorry you wasted your time in retail. But on the positive side you have a stable work history, can show up on time, follow directions. Self awareness is the most important attribute here. I wonder if being older now you have grown in maturity and are now realizing you have outgrown your current situation. Maybe its time to explore new careers, learn a skilled trade, etc.
You worked a very demanding job for a very long time probably the whole time you were suffering with burn out syndrome and couldn’t think further about your future! Now that you have a break you can think about something you like to do , volunteer too, also don’t despair you have parents and a house and most of free time !!
I wasted my 20’s away bouncing in strip clubs. Sure was alot of fun though!!!
You can fail and have a support system by living with your parents. The choice is yours ultimately or you can let your mentality dictate your decision making. Feelings are not good indicators at times to make decisions about our lives. Sure it tells us how we languish if we aren’t supporting our needs which is what it sounds like is happening here but ultimately it shouldn’t be what’s driving your day to day.
I left retail in 2023 and jumped to medical office administrative assisting work. Been fairly stable since then, I don’t treat patients but handle the office work.
First of all, you did not WASTE your time in retail. It may not have been the career option you wanted, but you proved that you’re capable of hard work, that you’re reliable, that you can hold a job consistently for a long period of time, AND you evidently helped pay of your parents’ mortgage because I assume that’s why you were able to switch to part-time after it was paid off. And honestly, just because society is shit and doesn’t value retail workers doesn’t mean many of us individually don’t. THANK YOU, for your service.
You sound like a good and decent person who can do whatever you want just as soon as you figure out what that is and put the time in.
Since you’re now part-time, maybe think about what you could do with the skills you have to create self-employment. Others here mentioned computer science (is that what your degree is in?). There are a million opportunities to design software and make passive income off it. Just because AI CAN do some of the work doesn’t mean people are using it for what people need. Shit, all the tech money is going into AI, and I’ll I really want are a bunch of simple solutions for things.
OR, you have clearly helped your parents. Maybe there’s a future for you in elder care, respite care, or something like that (not huge pay at the bottom, but you start a business and sell services to rich folks).
You don’t need to wait for opportunities. You can create them. You sound like you’re struggling with confidence, but you shouldn’t be so down on yourself. Your history so far actually says a lot of really good things about you.
Also, I’m in my 50s and am working on a new career transition. You, my friend, are not too old to do anything. Your life has barely started.
That’s a tough place to find yourself in. I’ve been there too, watching days melt into each other without much changing. It’s easy to feel like you missed the boat, but consider that you can still pivot, even in small ways. Something that’s weirdly helped me is this app called Haeru. It sends me little narratives of my days, which helps me reflect on all the moments, big or small. Maybe it could help spark some ideas or remind you that there’s still plenty to explore. Instead of drowning in regret, what’s one tiny thing you might want to try moving forward?
What degree?
Retail is Sales and operations management. I opened my own shop ten years ago and the skills add up to that (which isn’t nothing if you were good at them). If you were helping on the business end: purchasing/procurement, budgeting, inventory management.
Retail isn’t a waste. Nor is it dead. It is: changing. And those who say otherwise might never have seen the numbers (that I did, and frankly small potato’s compared to mass production shops or luxury retail).
Real estate? Software? Supporting manufacturers? Kitchen/Appliances?
You obviously were good at something.
It’s not a waste if you’re able to invest.
