   I did and honestly it turned out pretty well.

   My background is similar to yours. I have a bachelor’s and master’s in EE. But by the time I finished my masters, I wasn’t very passionate about it as a career. I was very interested in entrepreneurship, but I didn’t have any good ideas for a business. So I went to law school. I studied patent law and became a patent lawyer. It’s not the most fun job, but I work at a big firm and make more money than I ever thought I would. I can afford basically anything for my wife and kids and I haven’t stressed about money since I graduated. Our house is fully paid off, we go on regular vacations, our 401k’s are loaded, and I’m able to still be an active, present father.

   Is patent law my “passion”? No. But I do get to see interesting inventions and work with inventors who are smart, passionate, and innovative, so it’s not horrible either. I sit in front of a computer all day reading and writing, which isn’t great, but at least it’s generally interesting stuff I’m reading and writing.

   It has been a good path for me and my family. I would do it again. I’m still fairly young (40) and there’s still plenty of time to “find my passion,” but now I also have a big security net and a lot more skill and life experience, which I think will go a long way when the time comes.
