The more common your name, the harder it is to rank for until you reach some authority.

Make a list of sites where you can show your expertise and link your site there.
like coders have github , designers have Behance, make list of such sites and just link back to your site.
what type of portfolio is it?
Is it new? Have you done anything so that Google mentions it?
either have a solid unique name or work on your domain.
