Im 35m got laid off 6 months ago from a tech job that worked me to the bone for 4 years costing me my mental health and still nothing great on the horizon. I have almost 13 years experience and all i get are calls for contract roles. Im both terrified to not find a job, and terrified of having one. I feel the same way. Unfortunately, I think the answer to what you can do is: ‘whatever you can’. its not getting easier because were going through some serious societal changes. Either keep scrounging at the scraps of society or try to find an alternative lifestyle that breaks away from the system today as we know it. To be honest, I knew this 15 years ago when I started taking adult life seriously, and wish I had done just that.

No, look at it this way, the Lost and GI generations lived through 2 World Wars, the Spanish flu and the Great Depression. The Boomer generation was actually an unusual experience in history. All the benefits and a whole world that generation pissed away after their parents rebuilt the world.

mid twenties here. my biggest tips are to find a job you don’t hate, not take anything too seriously, and to not have kids. but you might as well try and do things you like, because time passes anyway.

This is the new normal..this is your time and place in history

Take some time to feel paralyzed. Then get your shit together and learn how to fight and survive here in this reality, not longing for the reality you were promised and expected.

Get society and survival down to its most basic i.e. what can you give to others so they give you what you need. Or if somehow you can cut down on others and just give yourself what you need.

Find a job that’s at least tolerable. Don’t have kids, and don’t eat out every single day. And most importantly do NOT doom scroll on dumb social media apps. It will ruin your entire perspective about everything when you are getting caught up in BS that doesn’t even relate to you.

And the absolute best thing to do is find an affordable hobby that you can enjoy. Even just taking time to listen to music, watch movies, play some games, read a book. Whatever you can to get your mind off the agony that is the real world.

Some people say escapism is bad, but personally I find it relieving that I can tune out the worlds issues by just doing something I enjoy by myself.

Sounds like you already know some good paths forward.

You are not alone friend. Try thinking small instead of big. Rather than trying to navigate the existential crisis we’re all having, try to determine your next steps. They don’t have to be big steps or steps that will save the world or guarantee you a fulfilling career immediately.

What are your interests? What are you passionate about? The people who are making decent money and living comfortably in your area – what are they doing for work? Find where these things intersect.

Look at the classes your local community college offers. Some colleges will have a career readiness program or a pathway/certification into the workforce. Ask them what the needs are in your area. See if they match up with your interests.

Most of all – take a deep breath. Breathe in for three seconds, hold it for five seconds, release for seven seconds. Ask yourself: what is bothering you? Do you have the ability to change it? If yes, do it. If no, worrying about it will only stress you out more

24 yo here. I feel the same. Graduated with a journalism degree because its what im passionate about. What i didn’t know is my debt was over 100k and all private. Found out within a day any hopes and dreams I once had can be kissed goodbye. You’re not alone is all I have to say. Now I guess i know to choose the unhappy money path .

You’re right about everything you said. The world does feel like its falling apart.

In fact, I’d hazard a guess that if you picked any moment in time, you’d find millions of people who felt just like you – that the world was falling apart and hopeless.

It probably does feel worse because social media amplifies the negative vs the positive in ways that previous generations didn’t have to experience.

So, what do you do? You just have to choose any path – the most tolerable one – and follow it.

We don’t know what the future holds. We can’t change the past. All we can do is make the best decision we can at the given moment in time.

The only choice not to make is to be paralyzed because then you’re never going to move forward at all and you’ll continue to fall deeper into despair.

Make a choice and follow through on it. You might make the wrong choice, but you’ll learn a lot along the way that will help you make better choices.

Make the choice so you find some form of purpose. As Viktor Frankl wrote in “Man’s Search for Meaning” about his fellow inmates in the concentration camps, “Those who have a ‘why’ to live for can bear almost any ‘how’.”

Make a choice, find your why.

Ignore society and keep moving forward. 99% of what you read about in the news doesn’t affect your daily life. Make your decisions for you and your family and keep on pushing. Life has been up and down for millennia. Keep your head down and focus on the things you can control!

Join the Air Force or Space Force. It’s a very comfortable life and a 9-5 job. There’s hundreds of careers to choose from. If you can think it the Air/Space Force need it.

The benefits are free housing, free food, free healthcare, free travel, free career training, and free university education.

You are supposed to just accept this and make people who talk about it seem crazy because there is no other way. That’s what normal good people do, is they distract themselves to the truth till it comes knocking on their front door 💯
