Is it synonymous? This is how topical authority works – and if you have lots of authority or CTR history for that word, you can rank for it.
If the wordis distinct however – you can definitely launch a campaign that plays to relevance. I.e. by writing about that keyword specifically, you can leverage your authority.

So if they have1,000,000 authority “points” (for illustrative purposes) and they’re 0.01% relevant = 10k
But if you have 10k authority points buit are 100% relevant = 1m
so a low authority site can definitely come in

PageRank based on Backlinks is the only model that has consistently worked for Google. Its not about being “smart” – its that people are unique and their tastes and needs are ever changing and evolving and also at different rates.
Content quality is vague, arbitrary and subjective, its not about intelligence.

No, it’s not just backlinks. Google also looks at trust, past history, and how users behave on the site. Sometimes old sites rank even with weak pages. I’ve seen this a lot, and yeah, it feels unfair but it happens.
We rank first page for some keywords with zero backlinks on the subject. SEO is never ever based on one factor.
Yeah, plus site age.
