The only way to know if something is outdated or not is to read it.
for big sites, i usually let screaming frog catch the broken links, ai flags outdated stats and I do a quick human skim for the rest. Schedule it every 6 to12 months so it’s not a panic fest. Robpts do the boring stuff, humans handle the messy judgment calls.
I make a coffee, pull up my chair and spend time reading the actual content.
I also cross check perfotmacne with Google search console and the key events report in Google analytics.
This will usually give me a good idea of what content may need to be improved.
“Sometimes you just have to grind” – tony hawk, probably.
If it’s from 2020 it’s probably worth updating regardless of other elements such as dead external links. If it was written from a 2020 SEO perspective, then there’s a good chance it is not going to perform well in 2025 and beyond.
What I would do is I extract all pages and their date – can use a simple Google Sheets apps script to do that. And then cross match the date with clicks and impressions directly in Google sheets.
But, if you have screaming frog I think you can do that directly by connecting SF with Search console.
Then, the older the post it is and the less performance it has, the higher priority the post has to be audited and updated.
Sidenote: if a post is clearly not performing well (such as less than 3 clicks and 300 impressions in 3 months) consider deleting it instead of wasting time and resources updating it.
Whenever I tested deleting non-performing content it always lead to improved performance of the other remaining pages on the website.
Non-performing content clearly drags down the other pages on the website from my experience. Something to keep in mind.
