Hey,
Leveraging an expired domain effectively requires quite a bit of know-how. if done right, it may help a bit, a lot, or not much. There are lots of variables. But in general, if it was a good domain and you do things right, it can help.
Now that that’s out of the way – the best way to use it:
1. Audit the past traffic and content using a combination of 3P tools and archive dot org (wayback machine) … what was ranking? …. why was it ranking? ….. is it still ranking? … why or why not? … if its no longer ranking, why not? Do you want it to rank again? etc…. lots of detective work.
2. Audit the links / context.. Do they have real contextually placed links going to a blog? make sure that blog stays there.. do they have branded links? those get a bit dicey, but if it was a real brand and you don’t own that brand, general best practice would be a wikipedia type page “this brand used to be”. …. have every existing link that’s worth a hoot either go directly to or 301 redirect to a page that matches the same or similar intent.
Just spitballing here, lots of variables. But TLDR: look at current / previous rankings, and see how you can maintain / enhance them, spun towards your new brand.. Match the intent on a page level, with a special attention to those pages that have good links. Make sure those links continue to point relevantly to match that intent.
u/SEOPub makes a good point too – im not a lawyer but makes perfect sense that you wouldn’t own the content that used to be on the site, even if you own the domain. So may want to be careful there.
food for thought – unless the old site was good (DR doesn’t matter), and you know what you’re doing, I wouldn’t put all your eggs in the expired domain basket. even when done right, they’re less effective than they used to be. May be better to start from scratch, with a new clean slate. Shortcuts like expired domains work less and less each day, and that’s by design.
The whole taxi, limo, car ride service niche is pretty competitive. For NYC, it is going to be even more competitive. You are likely going to need to attract a lot more links to compete.
The one thing I will warn you about that I see many people make the mistake of is do not use the old content that used to be on the site. I see that recommended all the time. People say to go to the WayBack Machine and grab the content.
That is copyright infringement. The old owner still owns the rights to that content. Buying the domain doesn’t give you the rights to the content unless you bought it from the old owner with a contract explicitly stating that you now own the content.
And yes, I do know people who had legal action taken against them for this.
