  1. For anyone using Windows 10 LTSC, PowerToys support end at version 33.1, after that it jump to a later version of Windows 10 which is not compatible.

  2. Irfanview has had this functionality for like 20 years.

  3. The only PowerToys I play with are the ones in the bedroom.

  4. I use a 3rd party app. Bulk rename utility.

Used it for years. Highly recommended.

  5. PowerToys is still a thing? For whatever reason, I was under the impression that they got rid of it.

  6. IMO the best rename utility is still the one I found when I was using Windows ME – [AF5 Rename Your Files](https://download.cnet.com/A-F-5-Rename-your-files/3000-2248_4-10135889.html). Simple and intuitive UI, and just as powerful as Advanced Renamer for the vast majority of use cases.

  7. Magic trick:
Select all files you want to have the same name ; F2 and type ; All of them now have filename (1) kinda names. For photos /more serious jobs I used irfanview batch processing/rename.

  8. I use total commander on windows, it has this any more builtin.

  9. PowerRename is still really clunky. It’s great for find and replace jobs, but when it comes to numbering or executing multiple tasks at once, it’s really limited, compared to other tools. Especially if you don’t know regex.

  10. On OSX I really like Name Mangler ([https://manytricks.com/namemangler/](https://manytricks.com/namemangler/)) it’s the most powerful renamer I’ve found with the ability to stack tasks. i.e. truncate then rename then add prefix.

it’s also cool because it has a preview to make sure you’re doing it right.

  11. > This is a Windows utility not 3rd party software. (docs.microsoft.com)

That doesn’t mean it is better…

When I used to use a mass renamer years ago, I don’t think that the MS tool was available… and that tool was perfect. Supported regex, etc…

  12. I have a set of files that are in MM_DD_YYYY that I want to change to YYYY-MM-DD. Will this program do that with a minimum of steps? I have done it in Advanced Renamer but it took several passes.

  13. PowerToys are fucking awesome just in general. I have a 32:10 monitor I use with my XPS 13 when I’m at home and it has FancyZones, the best management of windows on a large/ultrawide displays. Switching between layouts is super fast, as is placing and moving windows and it’s super lightweight too. Plus it has tons of other stuff baked into it.

  14. Something that Total Commander has been doing for literally decades

  15. I definitely am gonna check this out. For years, I have been using a GUI app that I made in VB forever ago, but there are a lot of features I never bothered finishing.

  16. While not super advanced, I’m actually pretty impressed with the simplicity of Mac OS rename feature when you select 2 files. For many purposes it’s good enough, and shockingly simple to figure out.

  17. If youre a data hoarder and youre still using file explorer, im not sure what masochism youre into.

use something like directory opus where all this is part of the ui.

  18. Was going to be asking this soon enough but I just found 2 answers in here. Will give BRU a go first since I trust what datahoarders use

  19. Or hear me out here. Like 5 lines of powershell

  20. I’m a fan of [Advanced Renamer](https://www.advancedrenamer.com). It’s very powerful, even lets you rename files using values from MP3 ID3 tags or JPEG EXIF tags.

  21. For the few times I’ve tried it, I was honestly impressed.

  22. Oh damn, that’s pretty cool.

I personally use den4b’s ReNamer but its good to know that Windows has a feature like that.

  23. I wonder if PowerToys will ever be included in Windows in the future?

  24. cool, this may come in handly, thanks for the share.

  25. On WSL or most Linux distros, you can just use `rename`.

    `rename s/1x/S01E/ *.mkv`
