  1. So I have 2015 wd my book. News cane out that they are vulnerable. So even if I don’t expose it to internet and use it on LAN,does the risk still exist

  2. Because they really don’t know clouds….at all…

  3. I wonder if this has anything to do with legacy drives being remote wiped in a hack a few months ago?

  4. And nothing of value was lost.

    Everything cloud needs to die.

  5. I do hope this encourages people not buy rubbish (from any company that is) and hope a cloud + HDD will be supported forever.

  6. The people that “buy” cloud/hosted services under the guise they don’t want any problems or to do any work makes me laugh all the time. How many Google services have been sunset? It’s not Office 365, it’s more like Office 362 really. “Your” laziness will come back to bite you some day.

  7. Aren’t their “cloud” products actually just external hard drives you can access through a web portal type of thing?

  8. FYI – At least in my experience, WD coupons are “special” in that they only apply on the regular price, because a sale is considered a “promotional offer”

  9. We should hoard the firmware files.
Would bet they get deleted a few month after…

  10. any general RPi/odroid/nasbox with OMV is better than this

i also don’t get how people think that his is for free for life, not even google does that besides the shared 15GB or microsoft with 5GB.

it’s fine as long as it works, but forget the internet access

  11. Used to have a WD My Cloud. Worst performing device ever. Finally shucked it and upgraded to an OMV NAS.

  12. I found the formfactor quite nice and though about getting one for off-site backups at my grandparents’. But now I’m glad I didn’t go with them.

  13. They stop the cloud support for drives older than 7 years.

You can debate the number of years, but nobody thought it would be forever right?

  14. Why would they stoo all their cloud products? Isn’t that like their main business besides storage devices?
Don’t you mean they just stop supporting their old and outdated services?

  15. Bad title… take my downvote. Oh and they can also run Linux, no no biggie.

  16. There is no cloud. There’s only other people’s computers.

  17. It’s the ol’ shuck-n-chuck. Shuck the drives, chuck the enclosure. Bob’s you’re uncle.

  18. Unintentionally or otherwise, this is a misleading post OP!

The announcement is for older Cloud products, not all of them. It’s been long known (and posted before).

  19. maybe a cheap buying opportunity on the horizon for some larger drives???? HUMMMMM

  20. “What a shock! The cloud was just other people’s computers all along!” -*Nobody Ever*

  21. It’s just for OS3 and earlier…title is misleading.

  22. Preach it on a lot of my tutorials… Take your s… out of the cloud.

  23. Just a note: I assume everyone here would know this but you can always shuck the old wd cloud unit after you copy the data off and throw the drive in a different NAS/enclosure.

  24. I own a mycloud gen2 but never ever used their cloud service. I dunno. I always felt it was a big no-no, and would just tunnel back home if I ever needed access to anything.

  25. They had that security breach this past year and likely decided that the risk, and subsequent guarantee, of future breaches and therefore lawsuits was going to be pricier than however much it would have taken to secure the cloud products, and continually keep them secure.

  26. One of the reasons this sub exists. Don’t trust any cloud that you don’t own
