Twitch Streamer Reckful died – preserving the channel

Just a few hours ago it was comfirmed that Byron Bernstein aka Reckful died:

It is unknown, what might happen to the channel and the VODs/Highlights/Clips on it.

The only feasable way I see right now is using Twitch Leecher (Windows/.NET Framework 4.8) https://github.com/Franiac/TwitchLeecher/releases

There used to be better ways and if you know a way to streamline this process, I am all open ears.

Quality various over the years, VODs go back to 2016, Highlights to 2012. 1 hour is roughly .5gb minimum and might be 5-6x as high for the most recent stuff.

I’m trying my best with the highlights but skipping August 2014 as of now, because it contains full VODs. I currently don’t have access to my main machines and am bottlenecked to 50mbits anyway and frankly I wouldn’t have the capacity for the VODS..

If you can help or have any tips/know someone who could help, please feel free to contact them.

The channel is currently playing old Vods “Reruns” (activated by his moderators): https://www.twitch.tv/reckful

VODs: https://www.twitch.tv/reckful/videos?filter=archives&sort=time (750)

Highlights: https://www.twitch.tv/reckful/videos?filter=highlights (850)

Clips: https://www.twitch.tv/reckful/clips?filter=clips&range=all

Edit: I use this template in Twitch Leecher under preferences: {channel}_{date}_{id}_{title}

Edit2: It looks like JDownloader can download them as well (might have to install the ffmpeg plugin for it?).

If you want to archive a specific month, please leave a comment like VODs_2016_12 (year_month) so we can track the progress.

I will sleep now, I’ll be back in a couple of hours.

  1. I don’t know if it’s too late to leave this comment, but I’ve been looking for his old leisure suit larry playthrough, which I think was around these times, specifically november.

  2. I have a Youtube account which preserved some of his content from the Twitch channel “Byron”

  3. There is a program i use alot that could download chat. I am not at home right now but if i get some time i will post it.

  4. I know I found out by accident that Jdownloader can do twitch streams as well.

  5. Damn this is sad. Haven’t watched the guy in years but he and his streams were always a good time. Rest in peace.

  6. Dowloading video is something I’ve seen tools for, like the one you linked. My concern is if the chat can be preserved too.

  7. For clips this is the best way to get all of the links.

It has to be done somewhat manually as there is some sort of API Limit that stops showing clips after the amount of links hit 900 ish. I Would suggest getting the CSV Output and using youtubedl-gui to download them as its much better than twitch leecher. (one of the dates within the file is the creation date)

I Downloaded about 10K Clips this way a few weeks ago with the DMCA Scare

That being said, i would love to know how he has vods going back that far on twitch as the normal limit is only few weeks

  8. youtube-dl does automatically combine the parts. You can pass in the standard twitch url or the chunked/index-dvr.m3u8. If you use the twitch url you can specify a file naming convention. If space is an issue might want to have a script that downloads the video, verifies no error, uploads it to a server, verifies transfer, deletes from local, and then repeat with the next file.

  9. I started using LetMeAtIt recently to rip WWE Network content. It seems to work for Twitch, as well. Free version works, but a paid upgrade does batch processing.

I haven’t tried ripping Twitch content with youtube-dl, which may well be possible. youtube-dl is the backbone for LetMeAtIt.

  10. Here’s the metadata and HLS playlist of every VOD (31MB):

To archive the videos, feed each video’s urllist.txt into your favorite download tool. Note that it adds up to three million files (each file is like 10 seconds of video).

You can then open the .m3u8 in VLC/QuickTime/etc to watch it, or use ffmpeg to convert it to a single video file.

  11. Will twitch delete the channel if it still has a moderator playing reruns every once in a while? I’m not understanding the purpose of backing all of those videos of playing games or is it other videos other than live streaming games?

Hopefully I did that right. I think that would cover both Japan trips and the Spain trip.

  13. maybe you need to let /u/-archivist know… i think thats his username
