Hello. So, i’ve been considering the NAS for a while. As of now, i have all my data on Google Drive. But as the transfer speeds and reactions to requests are REALLY slow, i’d like to have a NAS as main working storage.
The problem here is not having enough SATA ports on [HP ProDesk 400 g4](https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-prodesk-400-g4-desktop-mini-pc/21351205/document/c06047054) to handle 2 HDDs.
So i’ve been looking for solution and found expansion cards to x4 PCIe slot (in the machine) to expand the SATA port count. And surely enough, i found them!
I just don’t know if it would even work if i plug that expansion card to the, for example, x4 PCIe slot. The thing here is that it is named as ***(1) M.2 PCIe x4 2280/2230 Combo (for storage)*** and that’s the catch.
The question is can (or should) i connect the SATA to PCIe x4 card via extension cable [(something like this i believe)](https://i.imgur.com/z9EXoaF.png) and expect it to work properly? On that SATA to PCIe x4 card would be connected 2x HDDs 12TB.
The second way would be to buy the RAID card instead of SATA to PCIe. But i don’t know much about these RAID cards and the advantages / disadvantages comparing to software simulated RAID like in Unraid or FreeNAS.
I would appreciate any kind of help or suggestions.
