Seagate or Western Digital?

I have all blue WD 6TB. They’re getting kinda full I was thinking of going for WD 14TB red hard drives. I have $261 in Amazon money.

My PC is on during the day or when I use it and auto shuts down at 2am est. Maybe there’s a better brand besides the two, if so let me know?

  1. I’m pretty much happy with WD over the years, however, different people will have different opinions. As already mentioned, you can look for WD external drive and shuck it. Plus, if you value your data, remember about proper backups like in 3-2-1: [https://www.vmwareblog.org/3-2-1-backup-rule-data-will-always-survive/](https://www.vmwareblog.org/3-2-1-backup-rule-data-will-always-survive/). Any drive can fail any time.

  2. hgst hdd can be loud compare to seagate and wd. personally just go cheapest and larger drive. of course, i will try mix and match the capacity to reduce failure of both hdd in raid one. since there is chance hdd comes from the same bad batch.

  3. You’ll get different answers.

Get one with a good guarantee AND a vendor who doesn’t ness about with RMA. So if I was American, reading here, that wouldn’t be WD.

I use a mix of `Seagate exos & Toshiba enterprise in general (a few other brands/marks too).

  4. Seagate, WD, and Toshiba are the only hard drive manufacturers that exist. Other brands may make external drives in enclosures, but the drives inside are from one of those three hard drive manufacturers.

Consider getting an external WD Elements or My Book or Seagate Expansion drive and you can remove the disk from the shell and use it like a regular desktop drive. It is usually significantly cheaper than buying bare drives, especially in the USA. Only caveat is the warranty is only like 1 year (Seagate) or 2 years (WD), and when shucked it’s hit or miss if they’ll honor the warranty.
But at the cheaper price point it’s worth it in my opinion.

As an example, the Best Buy exclusive 14TB WD EasyStore recently is $199 or $169 if you can get to store and turn in an old hard drive for recycling. Hard to beat that deal. But I’d expect at least some similar pricing from Amazon on Black Friday.
