Recommend a good computer case for multiple HDDs?

I have been struggling to find a computer case that’s quiet enough to use with multiple HDDs. This is used for my own PC and not a NAS.

With some cases, HDD mounting is provided but seemed like an afterthought. In one case, I had some major resonance vibration/noise even with two drives in it.

I also tried a Fractal Define 7 which reduced this noise, but the airflow was poor enough that my case fans were always audible.

What would you guys recommend for a case?

  1. I have the Fractal Define 5. 5 3.5″ HDD in it so far + 2 ODD and 1 SSD. Can barely hear it in a quiet room from 2 feet away. Running an i5 and a GTX 550 in it, so it’s not lightweight in the compute department, either.

  2. I have a Fractal Design Meshify 2 XL. Great design and airflow. Using 5 Noctua 140mm ULN fans plus a 150mm Noctua on the CPU heatsink. A good quality PSU helps too. It’s very quiet overall.

Currently have 8 HDDs, 2 NVMEs and 3 PCIe cards. It’s about as loud as a 4 disk DAS I have hooked up to a different computer.

  3. I was going to recommend the Define 7 or 7XL, but saw you tried the 7. I use the XL and fans are low RPM and barely audible with drives < 40C.

  4. I like the Fractal Define R5. I don’t know how the airflow compares to the Define 7 but the drive mounting is good.

  5. I used the antec silent p101, it can take 8 3.5” drives it has a sound isolation door that can be removed so if the airflow is too poor you just take out 4 screws and that gives you a mesh front basically. The fractal design 804 is another option if the footprint will work for you.

  6. There are tons of cases on aliexpress, with 14 bays or more ([https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003423153027.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.66ad13d279bwNZ&algo_pvid=42c47aa0-d4d0-49e3-8a62-a9946597d931&algo_exp_id=42c47aa0-d4d0-49e3-8a62-a9946597d931-15&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000025718126720%22%7D](https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003423153027.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.66ad13d279bwNZ&algo_pvid=42c47aa0-d4d0-49e3-8a62-a9946597d931&algo_exp_id=42c47aa0-d4d0-49e3-8a62-a9946597d931-15&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000025718126720%22%7D)) – I’m considering grabbing one, but they are not exactly cheap (and will take forever to arrive…)
