Re-use used harddrive advice?

Do back-ups count as familiar archiving? I am looking for some opinions on re-using hard drives, and this community seems to be more active (and knowledgable!) on harddrives than r/harddrive.

I hope it’s alright to post my question here.

I can get a set of two identical hard drives with a 3TB capacity. The drives have been used for about 3-4 years. They have been spun down (but powered on) for most of that time. Each night they would have been a spun-up to write of about 13gb per week. These are NAS or Server grade drives by Toshiba, bought somewhere in the past four years.

The contents of the drives where 100% encrypted, so I was looking to do a single pass in overwriting them and then buying a second—hand Synology or QNAP NAS to use them (in RAID 1).

Do you think I should be weary of drive failures? I will be backing up two Macbooks. Those macbooks are also already being back-upped to their own two 1TB SSD’s. I might also use the NAS’s other features such as file sharing, plex, etc.

Thanks!

  1. All of my drives are old and second hand. I don’t hoard much so have no need to buy a 8tb drive (yet) so I make do with a 3TB NAS and old 500GB 2.5″ hhds I salvaged from old work laptops.

My needs are growing however but I have many spare drives to use yet.

I did order a new 3TB WD blue a couple years back. Arrived DOA 😀

Anyway I test regularly and before I use a drive I fully test it. But I do notice the odd strange sound, or click once in the while which has me making sure the backups are decently up to date

  2. For important data I’d be wary of used drives.

Why not get new ones on a Black Friday sale? Prices aren’t great the last few months but there are okay options today, like…

4TB WD Red Plus (WD40EFZX) for $69. Not the fastest, but CMR:
