  1. Hmm, if I read this right they claim to backup on a w s?

Backup anything yet sneaky ‘fine text’.

  2. Actually, none of the dark speculation so far about Polar Backup is based on any actual facts about the company’s behavior or their products’ performance, with one exception as noted below.

I understand being suspicious about “too good to be true” offers. And there have been various unlimited cloud storage companies that have gone under.

Polar Backup has taken a sustainable approach. Their terms of service have language that allows them to cancel your account, lifetime or not, for “abuse.” They define “abuse” as use that greatly exceeds the average storage of their other customers.

So, if you are a typical user, not an extreme data hoarder, you can back up all your stuff and it can grow year after year without exceeding any arbitrary limit.

Is that so unreasonable? To a devoted hoarder who wants to continuously upload an unending stream of movies, surveillance feeds, and Linux ISOs, yes, it is not what you want and is not truly “unlimited.”

In fact, under Australian law, unlimited actually means unlimited. But the governing law for Polar Backup is Finnish.

    Part of the TOC is:

    >> Your consumption of Polar Backup Products or Services may be deemed excessive if, within any month, your usage greatly exceeds the average level of monthly usage of Polar Backup customers, generally. We monitor the usage of our heaviest Unlimited account users, a dynamic margin is calculated based upon averages which, should a user fall into, we may require them to cease backup. In the event you are deemed to have violated this policy, we reserve the right to offer an alternative pricing plan or Polar Backup Product or Service that will permit you to continue to use Polar Backup Products or Services. Although violations of this policy have been infrequent, we reserve the right to terminate or suspend your license to use Polar Backup Products or Services and any license to use the Polar Backup Software, without prior notice in the event of a violation of this policy. <<

The exception I alluded to above: You might suddenly lose all your Polar backups if the company deems that you have “greatly exceeded” their customer average. But it sounds as though they would contact you first with other options though not obligated to do so.

  3. Let me guess, terrible upload speeds, the company will dissappear in a few months, anything uploaded and not encrypted will be scanned and sold for whatever value it has, and there’s probably some nasty reocurring payment method setup.

“unlimited data” and sub $10/year simply never go together. My best bet though is speeds will be fine for your first few GB, then drop to unusable. That way they can claim you have unlimited storage, but it’s something on your network end causing you to not be able to use it

  4. You can trust whoever you want, personally I wouldn’t trust any company with pricing like that. It doesn’t make sense, an there is no way they could be making money without some terrible business practice.

You get what you pay for is all I can say, if they get breached or it turns out they sell customer data don’t come complaining on Reddit lol

  5. I know this price is too good to be true, but after applying a couple coupons I got it down to 9 bucks for the year. I really don’t care if they go out of business or anything, I just thought for 9 bucks for unlimited cold storage , what the hell.

Thoughts, opinions? Has anyone used this service before?
