Of course this had to happen while I’m stuck at home in social isolation. Press F to pay respects to this soldier that entered service in November 2009

  1. What size is it? I might be able to send you one. if you are US based, Unless you are trying to keep specific drives?

  2. Good ol’ WD Caviar Green. I should probably keep an eye on mine…

  3. *salutes* So long, soldier. May you rest easy in the big server room in the sky.

  4. Lets see if the soldier holds out until you can go back in lol.

I just checked all my drive SMART stats by hand today since I won’t be going in for quite some time, they’re fairly new (60 x 12TB) so no issues thankfully. F for all the drives failing right when people can’t help them.

I guess I got lucky, I had a predfail on another server the day before I started isolation, so I managed to swap that out before hand.

  5. This is why you always keep some drives in hot swap.

/me notices he only put one drive in hotswap

    ?

  6. My WD10EADS-00M2B0 salutes it’s fallen brother (or close cousin?)

  7. 11 years on a rotational drive! That is a damn superhero.

  8. I have a WD1002FAEX from 2010 still trucking along. Coming up on its 10th birthday later this year. It’s the oldest drive I own by a large margin.

  9. I’m not sure I understand why this is a critical error? Drives have spare sectors and my understanding is that if you force a rewrite of the bad sectors the drive should automatically swap out the sector for a spare? I have a drive that SMART is reporting 1864 offline uncorrectable sectors (part of a zfs cluster) and it has been chugging along for months without a problem.

  10. Yesterday my Unraid boot stick died on me. Server is Offline until Amazon brings a new boot medium. Tomorow.

  11. You’re equating your home appliance to people who are shot to death in battle?

    Distasteful and lame.

  12. I’ve got a couple WD10EACS/EADS still spinning over here too!

All in Drobos so rebuild is automatic, and I haven’t had one fail yet, but I suppose ten years is a pretty good run. I’m ready when they do go…

  13. I went a little crazy buying drives to shuck late last year, and ended up with 6 or 7 extra 8TB drives sitting as warm spares in my array. Unintentionally prepped for this I guess…

  14. Is your server’s name Cosmos? I called mine Cosmo, haha.

  15. It says “to maintain data redundancy”, so I guess your data is fine as long as other disks don’t fail?

Same here. Had to order one from Western Digital using a student discount, thank god for schools letting you keep your .edu.

  17. I had a drive go 1 week ago. Luckily I ordered and received z replacement before Amazon started to slow down. My Seagate RMA is a different question though. I wonder if UPS will actually move it.

  18. I have no idea what your situation is, but where I live the orders make exceptions for people like IT workers who have to go maintain equipment needed to support remote workers, even in non essential industries. Also stuff like security guards and so on. Most of the rules have exceptions like this if you just need to run in and do one thing as long as you are maintaining separation and so on.

Whether this is applicable to you I couldn’t say.

Also, this error has been happening for days and you’re just being told now?

Granted, I’ve kept drives in service if I just get one error like this in isolation. If it came back I’d probably just put in a replacement.

  19. I had a drive die on Friday. I am fortunate I had a spare on hand. I ordered another one just in case.
    Good luck, sir!

  20. Just ordered my self some spares on Amazon says they should get here in three days.

  21. I’m so glad that I have two spare drivers just in case.

  22. Yup, I’ve got 2 drives in a RAID6 that just got their first unreadable sector error today, just as the country goes into 4 weeks of lockdown. Probably going to have to take the NAS offline before this is done
