Noise of WD Red Plus vs IronWolf

Hi there

I just wanted to share my experience with two 6TB drives:

-WD Red Plus WD60EFZX

-Seagate IronWolf ST6000VN001

both bought around September to November 2021.
I bought a Synology 1520+ and put the Ironwolfs in there, well knowing that the internet says the IronWolfs are louder than the WDs. My NAS in in my living room, so after a while I got annoyed with the IronWolfs, because my old NAS with 4TB WD Reds was inaudible. The IronWolfs were definitely not inaudible, the random IO caused by my docker containers were annoying while watching TV.

So I went on to buy WD Red Plus Drives and changed 2 of them, hoping to quieten it down. Much to my surprise, the WDs were even louder. And its not just me, my two flatmates came to me, asking what happened with the noise and I didn’t tell them beforehand.
The read and write actions of the WDs drive are higher pitched and thus much more noticeable.
However that may be or most certainly is not the same for other capacities, so be aware of that. I just wanted to share this because it contradicts the general notion that WDs are quieter. That may be true in other series and with other capacities, but not with this one.

Anyway I’m changing back to the IronWolfs and have to look at other ways to quieten it down.

  1. I have 4 WD Reds (8,8,8,4tb) in a server case and 8tb Ironwolf in my desktop (with soudproofing foam inside the case). Both of the computers are on top of each other in a rack cabinet next to me. When the reds spin up and start doing heavy reads, I can tell something is happening in the cabinet. When the ironwolf spins and starts doing heavy reads, I can tell it’s specifically the ironwolf. It might be the higher pitch of the reds that gets silenced better by the case and the cabinet.
