Noise level of Seagate Exos 16/18TB vs WD Gold 16/18TB

Hi everyone, I have a WD Gold 8TB (non-helium) and when I bought it it was a significant step up “noisewise” but over time I got used to it (I have a noise dampened Fractal Design case). Now I need to buy one 16/18TB drive. Reliability is no1 for me but based on my research both considered reliable (and fast). I am sitting 16-20hours/per day in front of my computer and would like to know how these 2 drives compare in terms of **noise**. Based on specs the Exos in idle should be louder (2.8 bels vs 20dbA) but based on internet search the personal experiences are mixed (but honestly not many people have both to compare…). In my country the 18TB Exos would be ~200USD cheaper however if it is significantly louder, then I need to chose the Gold.

Anyone any recommendation?

  1. 20 hours a day in front of the computer…

I’d not worry so much about the noise…

I’d worry more about a few things.

    1) Sitting disease (real thing, Google it)
    2) blue light filters are a must, you’ll be blind in no time at all
    3) diet, if sitting there so much you can’t be eating well
    4) exercise.. you need to move and get the muscles working
    5) carpal tunnel
    6) heart issues and chance of blood clots on the limbs
    7) sleep schedule and lack of sleep thereof
    8) Mental and social health

I don’t mean this to attack you, just wanted to inform you of the health issues this may cause and maybe the noise isn’t going to cause you so many issues as these will.

  2. Go with the cheaper option and buy noise cancelling headphones with those 200$. Typically all 7200 rpm drives i.e both WD gold and Exos should have similar noise levels.

  3. Having both i can tell you that the WD Gold 18TB on read/write produce more noise than the Seagate Exos 18TB.

  4. I have 18TB WD Gold drives. When they idle I can barely hear them (only faint whining), likewise with sequential reading and writing. But during rapid head movement they are LOUD! Clattering like crazy.
