It’s something. 56.3TB raw capacity. 4 decommissioned VNX5300 DAE connected to a Dell R210ii though a PERC H810 flashed to an LSI HBA firmware. Gonna be various things like VM, general storage and such. Might remove all the 10K drives and cut down to just 3 shelves. RN uses ~670W idle. Not ideal :P

  1. Do you mind answering questions about your build?

  2. Any chance of a photo of the rear? Thanks in advance.

  3. That’s a lot of power… idle. Looks kinda fun tho

  4. Idk what that is cuz I’m tired as hell and to lazy to research everything you said but its beautiful and you better take care of her.

  5. Well that’s alot of words just to say “I got an unnecessarily bulky space heater” ? nice setup!

  6. Is there a modern equivalent to the r210ii? I love the size but I want something with newer hardware.

  7. Jesus fucking Christ, you could store the whole goddamn internet on that beast of a machine. Nice.

  8. Dang. I remember years ago when the VNXs were top of the line gear and it was something to have that much raw storage. Now it’s obsolete.

I’d hate to have the power bill though for that. Much cheaper and efficient ways to do that. Not to mention the heat output and cooling required.

  9. Thanks for listing the power draw..that’s a lot of juice!

    670 w * 8765 hr = 5872.55 kw/h…at 13c kw/h = $763.36 / yr! Or $63.61/Month! Yikes!

  10. Honestly I’d sell the lot and replace it with modern stuff for power saving, space, noise.

Get 6x12s and call it a day.

  11. That would make like a billion dollars per day mining Chia. Or so I’ve been told.

  12. Huh, I’d expect much more than 670W for such monstrosity (I just have a small Synology 😉

  13. is there a different name for the JBOD? VNX5300 DAE is not showing anything for me.

anyone also notice how chia mining has taken JBOD prices and absolutely skyrocketed them?

    a ds4246 used to cost $300-$350 now it’s $2k-$4k

God i fucking hate miners with a PASSION.

  14. I built my own FreeNAS server. Right now I have 50TB of usable storage on it…but the power utilization is much lower.

I had 3 HP DL380s G6s for awhile (running ESXi) and after the 2nd month’s power bill in the summer I threw in the towel and sold them (didn’t lose much). I decided to put my money into a dedicated FreeNAS server and my personal machine (TR3970x, 128GB RAM , 20TB local). Kinda nice to be able to run up to 10 VMs on one machine. My power bill is still less than when I was running 3 DLs.

  15. Nice, I’ve got the EMC KTN-STL3 which I think is the older model of these. I ended up going the shucked 12TB route with mergerfs.

  16. 60 drives and 56.3TB raw. That’s amazingly awesome, but that’s a lot of noise, power and heat. I hope you have a server room. That in my 600 foot² apartment would make my wife leave me!

  17. Quite a beauty, but damn, could get that capacity with just four 18TB drives ha
