  1. This is one of those things you will tell others are your life accomplishments. Thank you and god bless!

  2. The nature of film makes the photos taken fundamentally different from how it works today. It was a commitment to hit the shutter button (burning one of a limited number on the roll, committing to pricey processing). So it’s extra interesting that most of these photos, someone thought of as a moment particularly interesting and worth preserving. It’s a window into what was important to the photographer and a bit about their personality. One personality might tend toward people and events where another might find environment or the beauty of nature important. I bet it’s possible to sort of start to reconstruct a picture of the photographer and their life and personality through this limited window. Cool project.

  3. #GUYS I GOT ENGAGED LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU ALL.

  4. Browsing these is a strange experience.

There are so many photos that appear to be from important events (firemen at a plane crash), or have small details that change the context of what you originally though the photo was (two kids in front of a bookshelf that appears to have nazi literature on it).

And some photos are creepy in their simplicity, as if there is something hidden in the dark parts.

I feel like if I fall in too deep, I may end up in a completely different world.

  5. Hey, the « midlife crisis » trip isn’t in Bali! It’s French Polynesia, there is three islands in there, a bit mixed up, but I see Tahiti(main island), Moorea and *Bora Bora*

  6. woah woah woah… Pump the brakes. You gone and done what now? I need to do this with my Dad’s photos. He was actually good back in the day. Can you help me with your gear setup!? Would love to get some help setting up my own project??!!

    Thanks!

  7. Just in case you didn’t already know, [this](https://slidenite.smugmug.com/SlideNight/i-5DJRqnS/A) and [this](https://slidenite.smugmug.com/SlideNight/i-s4pX9p5) are (probably the same?) 4th generation Chevrolet Impala Sports Coupe, 1965-1970. Wikipedia even has [a picture of an eerily similar one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1965_Chevrolet_Impala_Sport_Coupe_283_rear_right.jpg)

It looks to be older in the first pic, there’s rust and you can see a big dent next to the headlight. In the second pic it looks like they rolled it down the hill lol

  8. I think [this one](https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-zLvRwLm/0/X2/i-zLvRwLm-X2.jpg) is someone taking a picture of their house from the plane. It’s incredibly cool for the person who took it

  9. Life is so precious and fleeting. The most important moments of my life will soon be lost to time. Looking at these photos brings such a melancholy.

  10. I’m 19 but these make me feel nostalgic for some reason

  11. This is really awesome. I’d love to see this project grow. Currently going through these photos listening to the new Beach House album and getting the feels pretty hard.

  12. You are my hero! I CANNOT WAIT to dig through all of these! Thank you and well done!

  13. Great diverse set of locations and holiday pics here – Geirangerfjord pics, Berlin, Washington, St Petersburg to name a few. It’s funny how little has changed – a lot of these monuments seem identical to 30-40 or maybe even further back, down to the patina and cracks in the bricks. The cars, and everything else shifts so much, though. I was sad to see the cars and outfits most of all – it feels like today’s fashion and vehicle models are predominantly grey, black and white. The past seems to have so much more colour in consumer goods, at least.

  14. Now all you gotta do is wait for the stories to roll in, for example:

    1. I can’t believe you have them! I was sure they were all thrown out. I’m so happy to have pictures of my grandparents back!

    2. That sunovabitch did have a second family!

    3. Isn’t that “[Famous Person Name]?”

    4. That’s such and such island before it washed away.

    5. Wow, my hometown sure looked different.

    Etc.

  15. Amazing! So these literally got thrown away or auctioned off? I’d love to hear the story of how you get hold of them. Makes me melancholy looking through, the stories behind each one lost.

  16. This is really neat. Awesome job. It’s strange the things we get interested in.

  17. A Backup of all the Files on the Internet Archive would be nice. When someone can make sure that the Files are Save, then its these guys

  18. Not to be weird but like, even though I’m not religious this feels like you’re doing God’s work. Like this is one of the few genuinely important projects I’ve seen people talk about on here. It is way too easy for stuff like this to get lost to time. (Now if only we could do something similar with all the photos trapped on people’s smartphones that’ll eventually be lost forever)

  19. Cool project. You could partner with a nostalgia-themed pub or restaurant and let them display the photos in an endless shuffle.

  20. Wow, that’s fantastic!

    Some random thoughts:

    – Really cool to see pictures like these in color, and good non-faded color at that. Really closes the distance with the past. Some of the photos are really sharp and well-taken, and still look great!

    – Photos from the same trip / roll of film are mixed together with others. Is this on purpose for privacy protection? Or just from maybe uploading multiple streams of photos in parallel?

    – Among so many wedding and vacation photos, what really seems to grab my attention are the more everyday-life photos, which really help fill in the answer to the question of “how was life like back then?” Makes one wonder if we should be taking more everyday-life photos of ourselves, instead of just special events.

  21. Wait, I know adderal, is this really sponsored by adderal?

  22. That’s super cool. Any chance of adding a full res download button? I wouldn’t mind using some of these as wallpapers.

  23. Labour of love! Hope you have good backups.

  24. Can you share your process? I’m very interested in how you handle this volume of slides.
