    That orange box looks like it might neatly slide into a spot in a computer case or am I mistaken?

  4. I hope you didn’t apply heatsinks to the flash, consumer NAND requires a minimum temp of 40C and below that can actually reduce it’s lifespan. Above 40C isn’t necessary but is playing it safe.

    However, applying heatsinks to the controller on cheap SSDs may be useful depending on the controller.

    You will probably not need any fans since SSDs don’t produce much heat.

  5. Okay so Costco has a 1TB SSD on sale for $119, how is this better? I think the Costco one is a Sandisk and has DRAM, but I need to check?

  9. Can someone ELI5 what a dramless SSD is and what the difference is to a normal SSD? I’m guessing it’s missing DRAM, rather than a dram of whiskey…

  10. Remove the heatsinks from the NAND chips. They need to run around 60c or else they start degrading during writes.

  11. Nifty! Dramless SSDs suck for speed but I’m curious what kind of performance you’re getting.

    Also it’s interesting that you’re hitting a thermal limit. They don’t get any cooling when in their original case. Probably don’t even touch the case to disparage heat.

  12. It feels like the wallstreetbets of data storage, but I saw these SSDs and wondered how well (or if) they’d work. There’s 8 of them running in two 4x raid-z1 vdevs.

    Right out of the box, they exceed the SMART thermal limit just sitting there, since the shell is plastic and just insulates the PCB. So I pulled the PCBs out and added little heatsinks and a 3D printed duct for the fan.
