I am going from a striped array to a raidz1 but don’t know how to migrate data with limited sata ports.

Hi everyone, hope y’all doing great!

So I have an issue, I am currently running truenas and, my main storage pool is a stripe array of 2x2tb drives (not great i know but I did with what I had laying around.). I decided i was going to upgrade drives as I am running out of space and it’s not great reliability wise so I am going to buy 3 8tb drives to put in a raidz1 witch should give me much needed space.

But here is my problem, i don’t know how to migrate the data from my old pool to the new one. I can’t just create the new pool and transfer the data, as I don’t have enough sata ports to plug all the drives at the same time(And I don’t want to buy an hba just for that). I don’t want to buy one big drive to copy all the data as well, i won’t have enough money left once I’ll have bought the drives.

The two Ideas i thought of were to either change the drives one by one in truenas but from my understanding, you can’t just add a drive and change the pool from a striped array to a raidz1. The other (very janky, I know) idea I had would be to use some old USB drive enclosures to connect my old array to truenas and then copy the data but I don’t even know if truenas would still see the drives as they are ounce they would be in USB enclosures.

So if any of you has a great solution for me, I’d be very grateful.

In any case, great evening everyone.

  1. The USB solution should work fine, just expect it to take longer to copy everything over. You get bonus points for keeping the old drives for backups of important data.
