Google announced that it will stop indexing Flash content. Bad as Flash is, I still wonder how much content will be lost

  1. I think it’s pretty clear at this point that you just can’t trust google to index important thing. I really miss some kind of decentralized/open search engine

  2. Hey, has anyone backed up [z0r.de?](http://z0r.de)

I feel bad, their forums are infrequently recently active but are just posts about inactivity. There’s a lot of cool flash experiments and YTMND-esque stuff on there.

  3. Download everything you want to keep before the sites die. There are flash emulators which are 100%.

  4. I know flash gets a bad wrap now with its links to malware, but people need to remember that in the early 2000s/ late 90s nearly everything was flash or built in flash. Entire websites were made in flash. It’s going to be harder to lookup and preserve the early internet.

  5. Flash isn’t even bad tho. What do you mean? There are tons of great games made using Flash and Flash has good things like the ease of use.

  6. I owe a lot of my career’s success to Flash. Flash developers during the hot years were paid. Alas, the iPhone came out and that marked the beginning of the end for SWF based sites. Apple not willing to support it on their device that the entire world wanted I knew it was time to adjust my career. Responsive UX design was the next logical step.

  7. Let’s not forget that YouTube at its beginnings used Adobe Flash. Without it, it wouldn’t have been the huge success it is now.

  8. What about instagram doesnt it rely on flash for its videos?

  9. I would be really sad of Orisinal by Ferry Halim goes away. Really love his cutesy games.

  10. Glad I got most of the flash items I wanted long ago.

Speaking of, anyone know of a good .swf converter that’s preferably free?

  11. As bad as Flash is, Javascript is almost as bad. Literally the only advantage is Adobe doesn’t own a monopoly on Javascript. If you disable Javascript, a system with 2GB of RAM becomes very usable.

I’m using old.reddit.com, works fine without Javascript.

Also there’s nothing wrong with running rich web content via something compiled like Flash, the problem is Adobe owns a monopoly on Flash and there’s something called “Wirth’s law” where just because we have futuristic hardware compared to a decade ago, developers can afford to cut corners. Javascript is so bad, web developers are going back to compiled web content with WebASM. It’s pretty much Flash 2: Electric Boogaloo.

There’s even a search engine that only lists websites that don’t go insane with Javascript. https://wiby.me/

  12. So… Will I still be able to find newgrounds videos?

  13. so just make sure you use something like qwant, duckduckgo, bing, or yahoo! for flash games

  14. It took me a minute to realize this referred to the Flash Player, not the CW show. I guess Flash is already completely out of my mind.

  15. Do you think it would be smart of Microsoft to maybe have Bing pick up what Google is not willing to support ? I don’t really understand what the big deal is moving forward. I get that stuff will be lost. But if it’s like people are saying. Is it lost if another search engine can just pick it up ? Also, What’s the big picture, what does this mean for everyone?

  16. Will this only affect new content or content that changes locations? Or will the index cache that google has now invalidate itself and as the site gets re-indexed? So over time all Flash content will be gone from google index?

  17. Why does Google and Chrome have such a hard-on for hating Flash?

  18. Unpopular opinion: worth it. I hate losing bits of history as much as the next data nerd, but I hate flash continuing to exist more. It had great use cases in the past, but the past has been the past for a long ass time

  19. google is a search engine not a content hoster. nothing will be lost but it will be harder to find
