When nothing else makes sense in my life, I return to the plants, to nature. It’s a habit I’ve cultivated over many, many years and when I really look at it, it’s been an entire lifetime.
One of our safe spaces growing up was my grandparents garden. It was here I learnt to retreat with the flowers, the fruit trees, the stones and the blackbirds. Our huge block in my childhood home was also a source of constant exploration, peace, discovery, comfort and secret hidey holes. As I grew, the spaces became more open in forests and oceans, and the plants and animals, more and more communicative. Every single time something happened that I could not resolve in my head, every confusion, flood of grief, every fear, every heartache, I find myself, sometimes completely subconsciously making my way to these magical places and beings.
We are wired to be like this. We are wired to turn to the arms of nature, her cycles, the elements and the plant and animal kingdoms when our worlds get turned upside down (and also when they’re not). The sea knows our secrets and sorrows and she carries these for us deep in her heart, the forests hold us when we don’t know where to turn, the plants and animals patiently wait for us to turn to them to observe, listen and remember. And remember we must. Not only for the sake of our world and the protection and honouring of her but for ourselves. This reconnection, the remembering, the joy and wonder, the symbiosis, the communing, these are our greatest teachers, our greatest medicine and our way back home.
Feeling the need to find your way back to yourself? I have 3 spaces left for the 3 month Elemental Reconnection mentorship starting in a little over a week. It’s time to remember who we are, and why we came.
