I am planning on building a DIY NAS to use as a file server and ocassional media player (no transcoding).
* Low power consumption
Considering my goals I was planning on building a NAS using a Raspberry Pi 4 that I already own with an external multibay DAS (5 bays). However, there are a lot of people over the internet that says that this is a bad idea since this way I will be relying on a USB interface.
Now, I know that USB is no SATA connection but I don’t know exactly as to why, specifically, is a bad idea. I’ve have had external USB drives and I never had a problem with them.
I was also thinking about building a SFF pc using a Silversonte DS380B, but this can get a bit pricier since there are not many mini-ITX mother boards wiith 8 SATA interfaces (the DS380B has 8 external hotswappable bays + 4 internal) and low powered processors.
Some advice, please?
