DAS Pre-Purchase Input Needed

Hello Hoarders,

I’m in the market for a simple DAS to be purchased within a week.

It will be used for short term storage of incoming data and hold parts of the hoard that I am actively using. This will also be the datastore I review & organize datasets before moving it to long term storage.

Functionality:

1. NO need or want of network access features (NAS).
2. Plug&Play via TB3/4 and/or USB (C) 3.2/1 preferred.
3. Hardware RAID preferred if raid support is included. (No desire to be stuck with proprietary appsthat will need to be config’d on each OS [Win, MacOS, & Debian.])
EDIT: I will be using this in JBOD (individual disk) mode. RAID is not a must. It is included as I wasnt able to find HW that stated JBOD (individual disk) mode is the OOB operation.
4. Prefer 5 or 8 bays. 4 Minimum.

So far I’m considering:

1. [QNAP’s TR-004](https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/tr-004) ([TL-D800C](https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/tl-d800c) ruled out as it requires QNAP’s software on each machine based on their response.)
2. [ORICO 3.5 inch 4 Bay Aluminum Alloy Type-C Hard Drive Enclosure (RS400RC3)](https://www.orico.me/product/orico-3-5-inch-4-bay-aluminum-alloy-type-c-hard-drive-enclosure-with-raid-and-silicone-cover-rs400rc3/)
3. [~~ORICO 3.5 inch 5 Bay Magnetic-type Type-C Hard Drive Enclosure (DS500C3)~~](https://www.orico.cc/us/product/detail/3569.html)Edit: Too many neg reviews regarding wake times of several minutes

Anyone have experience with these and/or recommendations for consideration?

Thanks for any helpful input.

  1. I haven’t seen many 8 bay RAID enclosures mainly 4 or 5 bay. There is this one: https://www.amazon.com/OWC-ThunderBay-8-Bay-External-Thunderbolt/dp/B084S3S8JC

But it is expensive @ $749.

I personally have the QNAP TR-004. It serves it’s purpose. Nothing amazing. It uses SATA II and RAID 0 or RAID 5 caps out at about 240MB/sec: https://imgur.com/a/Wh4auoM

It also is only USB 3.1 Gen 1 5Gbps.

You lose SMART access to the drives through OS, but you can access them through the QNAP app. You can set the RAID type with DIP switches on the back or set it through the app. Once you set it in the app it will remain whatever RAID you set. App is not required to use the drive however.

I’ve used various other cheap hardware RAID boxes and none are all that fantastic. They get the job done. You will spend a fortune to get more than 4 or 5 bays. You could probably strap a RPi4 onto an 8 bay USB enclosure, RAID the drives with the RPi for a lot cheaper. But RPi shares bandwidth with all USB ports to a single PCIe lane, but it should be able to handle at least a few hundred MB/sec up and down while accessing the RAID drives.

    Thunderbolt 3(4 compatible)

    4 bays

    DisplayPort

    40Gbps speed

Use your own soft raid raid solution.

Is compatible with M1 macs and pre-2015 macs natively.

2015-2020 intel macs need custom Kext and/or dongles.

Ability to use SoftRaid software windows and macOS (raid5 windows in beta nearing completion).

    Use ZFS for macOS/Linux

    SoftRaid for macOS/Windows

    [Win Raid](https://askubuntu.com/questions/567432/how-do-i-properly-access-windows-software-raid-0) for Windows/Linux

$299 but can be had for as low as 139 refurb/used.

Can daisy chain off 1 thunderbolt port.

Power supply uses same 6pin and voltage as an ATX/SFX PSU.

Has handle for bugout ability, bugout bag and bugout data.

    Sturdy.

If you are inclined internal space can support a naked Nuc, making it stand alone.
