I have a system in place which in part involves a laptop that runs 24/7/365. It performs constant downloads of the data that I hoard as well as simultaneous uploads of all the data to a cloud storage backup server. The drive that is currently running these operations 24/7 is just a WD Passport. I am now upgrading to a 3.5″ Western Digital NAS (is Seagate a better NAS choice?) HDD that is more suitable for this operation. My concern is keeping this drive cool as it will be constantly running on my desk. I have explored countless options including building my own enclosure with fans in it, repurposing a NAS chassis, buying a DAS enclosure, buying a 3.5″ enclosure that is solid aluminum (like an icybox), buying a 3.5″ enclosure with fans built in, etc.
I am now turning to you fine people to ask what solution you would suggest. I’m trying to keep the project under $100 (not including the cost of the HDD.) Any advice would be appreciated.
