I currently have OMV installed on a [Thinkcentre M92p](https://www.lenovo.com/medias/lenovo-tiny-desktop-thinkcentre-m73.png?context=bWFzdGVyfHJvb3R8MTg1OTM5fGltYWdlL3BuZ3xoNTIvaGNlLzkzMjcxMDI2NTY1NDIucG5nfGM2YzAyODA1ZjhjYjJlMGM5YzA1Nzg1MmViNWQ1ZTZlYWRmMzQzZGRmOGRkMGEyMjAwOTNkNGU0YzBhODk5Yzk) and then have all of my data on a [WD 8TB MyBook](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/images2500x2500/wd_wdbbgb0080hbk_nesn_8tb_my_boo_1273853.jpg) and things have been working very well for years. I like the small footprint of the two devices next to each other, and my router lives on the shelf below them so the computer is hardwired. The external hard drive started grinding out of nowhere last night and I am searching for ideas on improving the setup instead of just getting another external hard drive.
I know there are hundreds of posts like mine on here, r/openmediavault, r/homelab, r/HomeServer, etc., and I have been reading through them all. I am seeing a lot of keywords like unRAID, NAS, DAS, JBOD, and brands being thrown around like Terramaster, QNAP, and Synology. Given that my setup is very simple and my budget is very low, I am just looking for some suggestions on putting together some external storage for my OMV computer. I have several SSD drives of various sizes laying around at work that I would like to repurpose if possible so I was looking some enclosures from Terramaster. I don’t need the storage drives to be network connected, just USB connected to the computer. OMV handles all the fancy stuff like network shares and all my Docker containers. If it’s too much of a headache to get random drives working nicely together, then I will just buy new drives. Hoping someone here can point me in the right direction regarding what types of drives, what type of enclosure, and if I need any special software to get the drives working as a single pool. Openmediavault has a ZFS plugin that I have never used (never had more than 1 external drive) and people seem to recommend that.
Thanks in advance to whoever takes the time to respond with their suggestions or recommendations!
